1939. Roosevelt, Franklin D. United States Postmaster Appointment Document (Signed). - A framed United States presidential appointment document dated August 9, 1939. The document is printed on paper with handwritten ink insertions and formal typography. The header features the name FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT in stylized block lettering above a central vignette of an eagle with a shield. The text commissions Maurice J. McGee as Postmaster at Troy, in the County of Bradford, State of Pennsylvania. The lower left of the document features an embossed paper seal of the Post Office Department, United States of America, depicting a horse and rider. The document bears two signatures at the bottom: a signature in dark ink on the right reading Franklin D Roosevelt and a signature on the left reading James A. Farley above the printed title Postmaster General. The document is housed in a wood frame with a distressed gold and green finish and a glass front. The reverse is sealed with brown paper and fitted with a hanging wire. The frame measures approximately 18.5 inches wide by 15.5 inches high. The paper shows significant and widespread foxing and brown spotting throughout (photo 1). There is overall yellowing and toning to the paper consistent with age, and minor horizontal creasing is visible across the center (photo 2). The frame shows significant wear, including multiple chips and losses to the gold and green finish along the edges and corners (photo 11). The brown paper backing is wrinkled and shows areas of indentation (photo 10). The signatures and embossed seal remain clear and legible (photos 4, 5, and 6).
