1437-1757 Collection of Eleven Dutch Heraldic Wax and Wafer Seal Impressions - A collection of eleven heraldic seal impressions mounted on annotated paper and cardstock fragments, primarily representing Dutch municipal arms and family crests. The assortment includes ten wax seals in shades of dark brown, black, dark green, and bright orange-red, alongside one paper wafer seal. Each specimen is mounted on cardstock or paper with handwritten Dutch annotations identifying the subjects, dates, and archival references. Notable identified subjects include: - A paper wafer seal for the city of Bergen op Zoom, featuring a shield with three saltire crosses and two human supporters, with a circular legend reading in part BERGARVM and REGIMINE (photo 2). - An orange-red wax seal for Willem Claeszoon of Amersfoort, dated 1437, showing a shield within a gothic tracery border (photo 7). - Armorial crests for families including Jan Teylingen (1721), Kien (1699), Gerrit Adriaansz du Four (1757), Beels (18th century), Barckman, and Pieter Blieck (1718). - A seal for Pieter Abrahamse of Arnemuiden (1712) featuring a flying angel (vliegende engel). Several mounts bear stamped archival notations including Arm Gen Blz and A.G.R-D1. blz. One large red wax seal is mounted on a fragment of a technical Dutch architectural drawing containing text such as Schuurplaat tot raden (photo 10). The specimens demonstrate various heraldic elements including mantling, lion supporters, and quartered shields. The collection shows signs of age consistent with 18th and 19th-century philatelic ephemera. The wax seals range in condition from intact with high detail (photo 7) to significantly fragmented or chipped (photos 5, 6, and 11). Several seals have been stabilized or repaired using paper strips or adhesive tape (photos 3, 8, and 11). The mounting cards exhibit expected edge wear, light foxing, and adhesive staining from the mounting process. The paper wafer seal (photo 2) is in excellent condition with clear impressions.
