Burroughs, Edgar Rice. Tarzan the Terrible. Grosset & Dunlap, 1921. Madison Square Edition (DJ) - This lot features a hardcover edition of Tarzan the Terrible by Edgar Rice Burroughs, published by Grosset & Dunlap as part of their Madison Square Books series. The volume is bound in the publisher's red cloth boards with the title and author name printed in blue on the spine. It is accompanied by the original DJ with protective cover. The dust jacket features a vibrant color illustration on the front panel depicting the protagonist wrestling a beast, with stylized red lettering for the title. The rear panel of the dust jacket advertises other titles in the Madison Square Books series, including works by Agatha Christie, Max Brand, and Pearl Buck. The copyright page states, Copyright, 1921, by Edgar Rice Burroughs / Copyrighted in Great Britain. The front flyleaf contains a handwritten ink inscription reading John Avery / Xmas 1943. Above this inscription are penciled numerals reading #205 / 25 / 92 / 0008-. The interior pages are printed on age-toned paper stock. The dust jacket shows significant wear and age-related deterioration, including a large triangular loss at the top center of the front panel (photo 1). There is notable chipping, creasing, and small tears along the top and bottom edges, as well as rubbing at the corners and along the hinges (photo 1 and 2). The spine of the jacket is heavily sun-faded to a cream color, contrasting with the blue text (photo 3). The red cloth binding remains structurally sound with light shelf wear to the extremities. The interior pages exhibit uniform age-toning throughout (photo 6). The front flyleaf bears a handwritten gift inscription from 1943 and light pencil notations (photo 4). The protective plastic sleeve shows some surface scuffing but has prevented further handling wear to the paper jacket.
