Burroughs, Edgar Rice. Tarzan and the Jewels of Opar. Grosset & Dunlap, c. 1943. (DJ) - A hardcover edition of Tarzan and the Jewels of Opar by Edgar Rice Burroughs, published by Grosset & Dunlap as part of the Madison Square Books series. This volume is a wartime reprint, issued in the early 1940s, as identified by the specific publisher's notice on the title page and dust jacket stating the book was produced under wartime conditions in compliance with government regulations for the conservation of paper. The book is bound in red cloth with the title printed on the spine. It retains its original pictorial dust jacket featuring a color illustration of Tarzan engaged in combat with a lion. The title page bears a black and white illustration of Tarzan atop a lion and includes the publisher's imprint Grosset & Dunlap Publishers, New York. The copyright page identifies the original copyright as 1918 by A. C. McClurg & Co. The front flyleaf contains several handwritten pencil notations including K1356, 28-, 000.8, and J1. The dust jacket is housed in a clear protective mylar cover. The book is in fair to good condition. The pictorial dust jacket exhibits significant edge wear, including chipping and small losses to the head and tail of the spine (photo 3) and along the top and bottom edges (photo 1). The text block shows heavy toning and browning throughout, typical of the high-acid paper used during WWII (photo 8, 11). There are notable small holes and paper losses to the bottom edge of the first several leaves (photo 10, 11) and the bottom edge of the rear leaves (photo 12, 13). A small piece is missing from the top outer corner of the first page of Chapter XXI (photo 14). Small insect holes are visible on the bottom edge of the closed text block (photo 15, 16). The red cloth binding shows minor shelf wear at the extremities.
