1964. Simpson, Colin. Plumes and Arrows: Inside New Guinea. A. S. Barnes. First American Edition. - An octavo-sized ethnographic work by Colin Simpson titled Plumes and Arrows: Inside New Guinea, published in 1964 by A. S. Barnes and Company, New York. The volume is a selective combination of the author's previous works: Adam with Arrows, Adam in Plumes, and the New Guinea chapters of Islands of Men. The book is bound in publisher's green cloth with gilt-stamped titles and a warrior figure on the spine, and a gilt-stamped bird of paradise on the front board. It contains 117 photographs, including 35 color plates, as well as maps, decorative endpapers, and drawings by Claire Simpson. An appendix titled From Stone Age to Parliamentary Government in a Decade by Dr. John T. Gunther, O.B.E., is included at the rear. The copyright page identifies this as the First American Edition 1964 and includes a printed dedication to Sir Edward Hallstrom. The front free endpaper bears an inscription written in ink reading Bob / Colin (photo 4). The external cloth binding shows significant condition issues including extensive yellow spotting and foxing across the spine and rear cover (photo 2, 3). There is visible shelf wear to the extremities, including bumping and fraying at the spine ends and corners (photo 1, 3). Internally, the text block and plates remain generally clean and bright (photo 8, 10). The hinges are secure, and the sepia-toned pictorial endpapers are intact (photo 4, 16). The book is offered without the original dust jacket.
