c. 1943-1945. Burroughs, Edgar Rice. Tarzan and the Ant Men. Grosset & Dunlap. (DJ) - A wartime edition of Tarzan and the Ant Men by Edgar Rice Burroughs, published by Grosset & Dunlap, New York. This octavo-sized volume is bound in publisher's red cloth and retains its original illustrated dust jacket, now housed in a protective mylar cover. The title page features a black ink vignette of Tarzan and a lion and bears a printed boxed statement reading: This book, while produced under wartime conditions, in full compliance with government regulations for the conservation of paper and other essential materials, is COMPLETE AND UNABRIDGED. The front flap of the dust jacket contains a plot summary, while the rear flap features a description of the author's work Tarzan and the Golden Lion. The front flyleaf bears a pencil inscription reading 2.0 (photo 4). The spine of the dust jacket includes the title, author's name, and a printed publisher's mark at the foot reading GROSSET & DUNLAP in a rectangular box with a red diamond device. The interior pages are printed on age-toned paper typical of wartime stock. The dust jacket shows significant wear, including a large triangular chip and loss at the top left corner of the front panel extending into the spine head (photo 1). The top and bottom edges of the jacket exhibit creasing, small closed tears, and minor chipping (photo 3). The red cloth binding is visible where the jacket is chipped at the spine head (photo 3). The internal pages show uniform age-toning and foxing throughout (photos 5-9). A pencil price or inventory mark 2.0 is present on the front flyleaf (photo 4). The protective mylar sleeve shows some wrinkling and adhesive tape residue on the interior flaps (photos 4, 8).
