1910. Hough, Emerson. The Purchase Price. Grosset & Dunlap. Early Reprint Edition (DJ) - A hardcover edition of The Purchase Price or The Cause of Compromise by Emerson Hough, published in New York by Grosset & Dunlap. This volume is an octavo-sized work bound in the publisher's original green cloth with a pictorial dust jacket. The title page identifies the author as Emerson Hough, noted as the author of The Covered Wagon, and states the work is illustrated by M. Leone Bracker and Edmund Frederick. The copyright page identifies the copyright date as 1910 held by Emerson Hough. The text is printed in the United States of America. The book features a black-and-white frontispiece illustration of a woman on a bed, captioned from page 153, and several internal line-drawn illustrations by Edmund Frederick, including depictions of characters Carlisle and Josephine. The dust jacket features a color pictorial front depicting a horse-drawn carriage in a landscape and a rear panel listing other novels by Emerson Hough available from Grosset & Dunlap. The dust jacket is in fair condition, exhibiting significant paper loss at the head and tail of the spine (photo 3), large chips and closed tears along the top and bottom edges of the front and rear panels (photos 1 and 2), and general toning and surface soiling. The green cloth binding shows wear at the spine ends and corners, with a slight lean to the spine (photo 3). Internally, the pages show age-related toning throughout (photo 10). There is a small tear to the paper at the top edge of the rear endpaper (photo 15). The illustrations remain crisp and the binding is secure.
