1933. Grahame, Kenneth. The Wind in the Willows. Charles Scribner's Sons. Illustrated (DJ) - This is a hardcover edition of Kenneth Grahame's classic children's novel, The Wind in the Willows, featuring illustrations by Ernest H. Shepard. The title page is printed in black ink and reads: THE WIND / IN THE WILLOWS / BY / KENNETH GRAHAME / ILLUSTRATED BY / ERNEST H. SHEPARD / [illustration of Mr. Toad smoking a cigar] / NEW YORK / CHARLES SCRIBNER'S SONS / 1933. The copyright page states: COPYRIGHT, 1908, 1913, 1933, BY / CHARLES SCRIBNER'S SONS / Printed in the United States of America. The volume is bound in light blue publisher's cloth and retains the original yellow pictorial dust jacket. The jacket features red script lettering for the title and black line illustrations by Shepard. The front flap of the dust jacket is unclipped and shows a printed price of $1.00 in the upper right corner. The interior features illustrated map endpapers printed in blue ink, depicting the various locations from the story, such as Toad Hall, Wild Wood, and Mole's House. The text is accompanied by numerous black-and-white line illustrations by Ernest H. Shepard throughout. A handwritten inscription in black ink on the front flyleaf reads: To Charles / from / Billy Schulze / Christmas - 1937. The book is an octavo-sized volume with deckle-edged paper. The dust jacket is in fair to good condition, showing significant shelf wear. Notable defects include a large loss at the tail of the spine (photo 3), chipping and small tears along the top and bottom edges (photos 1, 2, and 4), and general toning and light staining to the front and rear panels (photos 1 and 2). The blue cloth binding is stable, though the spine ends are bumped and show light rubbing (photo 3). The interior pages exhibit light, uniform toning consistent with age, but no significant foxing, marks, or tears are visible in the provided images. The gift inscription is clear and does not bleed through to the surrounding pages (photo 5).
