1892. Smith, S. R. The Wyoming Valley in 1892. The Scranton Republican Print. First Edition. - A first edition local history titled The Wyoming Valley in 1892 by S. R. Smith. The title page indicates publication by The Scranton Republican Print, Wilkes-Barre, PA, dated 1892. The volume is bound in the publisher's dark green cloth, featuring decorative blind-stamped Greek key borders on the front and back covers and gilt-stamped lettering on the front. The spine is finished in cloth with a small white rectangular adhesive label at the base printed with the library classification 974.8 S. The interior is printed on heavy paper stock and contains numerous black-and-white plates. These include a frontispiece portrait of the author, S. R. Smith, and several collage plates featuring landscapes such as the Susquehanna River, Mill Hollow, and local landmarks including the Wyoming Monument and Wyoming Seminary. The text includes historical accounts of the Wyoming Valley and various townships, specifically featuring a section on Kingston. A significant portion of the work is dedicated to biographical sketches of local figures, accompanied by composite portrait plates of prominent citizens. Identifiable biographies include those of Henry Evans, C. Ben. Johnson, Cyrus Straw, and D. K. Spry. The publication serves as both a primary historical record and a genealogical resource for Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. The book is in fair to good condition, consistent with an ex-library copy. The cloth binding shows significant shelf wear, particularly at the corners and spine ends where the fabric has frayed (photo 1). The front cover exhibits several areas of white spotting and circular staining (photo 1). The spine is sun-faded and bears an adhesive library call number label (photo 3). Internally, the pages show light age-toning. There is a visible tear in the paper at the lower gutter of the title page and the preceding leaf (photo 4). The portrait plates and text remain generally clean, though occasional handling smudges are present in the margins (photo 7). The binding appears tight despite the external wear.
