1930s. Aesop. Aesop's Fables. Grosset & Dunlap, n.d. Illustrated by John Tenniel (DJ) - A cloth-bound volume of Aesop's Fables published by Grosset & Dunlap, New York. The work is illustrated throughout with black and white wood-engraved plates by John Tenniel. The volume contains an introductory text titled Introduction to the Life and Fables of Aesop. The text includes numerous classic fables such as The Vain Jackdaw, The Wolf and the Lamb, The Lion in Love, The Travelers and the Hatchet, and The Ass in the Lion's Skin. The book is presented in its original illustrated dust jacket featuring a color illustration signed Arthur Rackham 1912 on the front panel. The dust jacket reverse lists other titles in the Famous Stories for Young People series published by Grosset & Dunlap. The book features pictorial endpapers in teal with white animal motifs and a publisher's green cloth binding with yellow stamped lettering and decoration to the spine. The copyright page states Printed in the United States of America. The dust jacket shows significant wear including chipping and small losses at the corners and spine ends (photo 1, 2, 3). There is visible rubbing and light creasing to the jacket edges and a small closed tear on the front panel (photo 1). The internal pages show light age-toning and occasional minor foxing spots (photo 5). A small damp stain is visible at the bottom edge of the front endpaper and flyleaf (photo 6). The cloth binding appears generally sound with some shelf wear to the bottom edges (photo 3).
