1912 Robert H. Milligan The Fetish Folk of West Africa Hardcover Book - A 1912 first edition copy of The Fetish Folk of West Africa by Robert H. Milligan, published by the Fleming H. Revell Company. The volume is bound in olive green cloth with vertical ribbing, featuring decorative orange and black stamped illustrations and typography on the front board and spine. The front cover displays a central graphic of a horned mask flanked by two stylized spears, with the title and author name positioned above. The spine carries the title and the author surname Milligan above a smaller version of the mask motif, with the publisher name REVELL at the foot. A copyright page states Copyright, 1912, by FLEMING H. REVELL COMPANY. A separate page lists publication offices in New York at 158 Fifth Avenue, Chicago at 125 North Wabash Ave., Toronto at 25 Richmond Street, W., London at 21 Paternoster Square, and Edinburgh at 100 Princes Street. The interior is illustrated with numerous black and white photographic plates, including a portrait captioned Amvama, A Fang Catechist, a group social scene titled An Mpongwe Wedding, and a vessel named The Dorothy. The work also contains musical transcriptions, such as the Dance Song of Mpongwe and the Canoe Song of Gaboon, as well as several pages of text including a chapter titled Missions and Social Progress. The book shows signs of age and handling consistent with its publication date. There is minor bumping and fraying to the cloth at the spine ends and corners (photo 1, photo 3). The interior pages show typical light toning, and there is visible foxing and a dark stain on the endpapers (photo 5). The binding remains intact, though there is a small separation starting at the interior hinge (photo 7).
