c. 1850s Sixth-Plate Daguerreotype of a Seated Couple in a Leather Case - A mid-19th century sixth-plate daguerreotype depicting a double portrait of a man and a woman. The male subject is shown seated, wearing a dark suit with a high-collared white shirt and a black cravat. The female subject wears a dark, patterned dress featuring a repeating light-colored foliate motif, a white lace-trimmed bonnet, and a matching white ribbon tied at the neck. The image is housed in a decorative brass mat with a multi-lobed, scalloped opening and a stippled or textured finish. The assembly is contained within a traditional wood case covered in dark brown embossed leather. The interior of the case lid is lined with red silk velvet, embossed with a central four-pointed foliate emblem surrounded by elaborate scroll and leaf patterns. The case is constructed with a hinged spine and a small brass hook-and-eye closure. No maker marks or signatures are visible on the plate, mat, or case. Case (closed) measures approximately 3 3/4 inches by 3 1/4 inches. The daguerreotype plate exhibits heavy oxidation and silver tarnish concentrated primarily around the edges of the mat opening, visible in all interior views. There are scattered dust particles and small spots of discoloration on the surface of the image and the brass mat (photo 6). The lower portion of the image shows significant loss of detail and clarity (photo 9). The brass mat shows localized surface scratches and oxidation spots (photo 1). The leather case is in poor condition with extensive wear and material loss; the leather covering is missing from the spine and corners, exposing the underlying wood core (photo 7, 8). The velvet lining shows minor fading and indentation but remains largely intact.
