1919. Burroughs, Edgar Rice. Jungle Tales of Tarzan. Grosset & Dunlap. Wartime Edition (DJ) - A hardcover edition of Jungle Tales of Tarzan by Edgar Rice Burroughs, published by Grosset & Dunlap in New York. The title page features a black-and-white illustration of Tarzan wrestling a lion above a boxed notice stating the book was produced under wartime conditions in compliance with government paper conservation regulations. The copyright page carries a 1919 date for Edgar Rice Burroughs and notes the work was copyrighted in Great Britain and made in the United States of America. The text is printed on age-toned paper and includes a table of contents listing twelve chapters. The volume is illustrated throughout with black-and-white line drawings at the head of chapters, including depictions of Tarzan with apes and various jungle animals. The front flyleaf bears a handwritten ownership inscription in blue ink reading: David Scudder / Painted Post / N.Y. / 2 (photo 4). The dust jacket features a full-color illustration on the front cover of Tarzan being carried through the air by a large eagle, with the title in red stylized lettering. The rear panel of the dust jacket advertises Madison Square Books, listing works by contemporary authors including Agatha Christie, Dashiell Hammett, and Pearl Buck. The spine of the dust jacket is cream-colored with blue printed text. The dust jacket is in poor condition with significant paper loss at the head and tail of the spine and along the top edges of the front and rear panels (photos 1 and 2). There are multiple tears, including a large triangular tear on the rear panel (photo 2) and a small puncture on the spine (photo 3). The jacket is currently housed in a clear protective plastic sleeve. The internal pages exhibit heavy browning and oxidation consistent with the acidic paper used during wartime production (photos 5-11). General shelf wear and bumping are visible to the corners and spine ends. The front flyleaf contains a four-line handwritten inscription in ink (photo 4). There is visible adhesive residue or staining on the interior flaps of the dust jacket.
