19th Century Victorian Leather Bound Photograph Album with Tintypes and CDVs - A Victorian-era photograph album featuring a brown embossed leather binding with a deeply recessed, ornate foliate and geometric design. The spine is detailed with gold-embossed floral motifs and the word Album printed in a decorative Gothic font. The album is secured with a hinged brass clasp featuring an engraved diamond and scroll pattern. The interior pages are composed of heavy cardstock with gilt edges and die-cut window mounts, several of which contain original 19th-century portraits including tintypes and carte-de-visite (CDV) photographs. The subjects include men, women, and children in period dress. The interior endpapers feature a blue and white geometric diamond pattern. One window mount contains a printed identification card that reads: N. JENKS, Over Manchester & Wilson's Book Store, BOONVILLE, N. Y. Negatives preserved. Affixed to this same mount is a blue two-cent U.S. internal revenue stamp with a handwritten black ink X cancellation. The leather binding shows visible scuffing, surface wear, and loss of material at the corners and along the top and bottom edges of the spine (photos 1, 2, and 3). The internal cardstock pages exhibit toning and foxing consistent with age (photo 5). Several of the paper photograph mounts show small tears and wear around the insertion slots (photos 6 and 18). The brass clasp remains functional but shows minor surface oxidation and wear (photo 4). The photographs themselves show varying degrees of surface wear and fading typical for 19th-century media (photos 7-19).
