1979 Greek Pelo Attika Cast Composite Plaque of Theatrical Masks - A Greek hand-made cast composite wall plaque featuring a relief frieze of nine theatrical masks representing characters from Classical drama. The front face is inscribed with the names of prominent Greek playwrights in Greek script: ΘΕΣΠΙΣ (Thespis), ΑΙΣΧΥΛΟΣ (Aeschylus), ΕΥΡΙΠΙΔΗΣ (Euripides), ΣΟΦΟΚΛΗΣ (Sophocles), and ΑΡΙΣΤΟΦΑΝΗΣ (Aristophanes). The upper edge of the rectangular plaque is ornamented with seven stylized palmette motifs. The object is finished with a dark, bronze-effect patinated coating over a lighter substrate. The reverse is unfinished and contains two integral mounting points joined by a knotted leather hanging cord. Several impressed marks are visible on the back, including a circular seal containing the characters G G and four dots, a rectangular stamp containing the characters PELO and ATTIKA, a rectangular mark reading HANDMADE IN GREECE, a model number № 88, and a production date stamp reading 17 ΣΕΠ. 1979. Width: 10.75 inches at the widest point. The plaque is in good condition with minor surface wear consistent with age. There are small chips to the dark finish on the protruding relief elements, specifically the noses and brows of the masks (photo 2 and 4), and along the lower edge and corners (photo 1), revealing the lighter-colored composite material beneath. The reverse shows minor surface abrasions and staining (photo 5).
