1853-1873. The Holy Bible. Mid-19th Century Family Bible with Hill Family Records. - A large format mid-19th-century American family Bible bound in full brown leather. The spine is detailed with four raised bands and a darkened leather label featuring the gilt-stamped title HOLY BIBLE. The volume includes several supplemental sections characteristic of the period, including A Chronological Index of the Years and Times from Adam unto Christ, A Table of Time, and A Table of Offices and Conditions of Men. The book contains extensive handwritten genealogical records for the Hill family. A front endpaper bears the hand-inked inscription Harvey Hill, 58 Lynn St, New Whatcom, Wash, and 1151 High St, New Whatcom Wash, identifying provenance in the settlement that merged to form Bellingham, Washington, in 1903. The Family Record section documents the Marriages of the children of Eber and L. M. Hill between the years 1853 and 1873. The records list eleven children: Angeline, Delilah, Mary, Harvey, Willard A., Sarah E., Hannah, John, Catherine, Seliny, and Almenzo B. Hill, alongside their respective spouses, including members of the Conley, Squire, Squires, Ellison, Lynn, Olney, Drake, Darkin, Yester, and Lutver families. The volume is in poor condition. The leather binding is heavily distressed with severe scuffing, cracking, and deep peeling across both boards and the spine (photos 1, 2, and 3). There are major losses of leather at the spine ends and at all four corners (photo 2). The internal text block shows heavy foxing and significant water staining throughout (photos 4, 11, and 12). The early and late leaves, including the supplemental tables and family records, exhibit heavy edge chipping, fraying, and large irregular tears that in some cases affect the text (photos 5 and 12). The binding is structurally weak at the joints.
