Ninth-Plate Tintype of a Rural Homestead with Figures, 19th Century - This nineteenth-century tintype, also known as a ferrotype, depicts a rural homestead scene. The image features two white-painted, clapboard-sided structures: a dwelling on the left and a building with a large open entrance on the right, likely a barn or carriage house. Two figures are standing near the entrance of the building on the right. A rudimentary post-and-rail fence is visible in the foreground, and a dense line of trees forms the background. The photograph is an unmounted, thin metal plate with clipped corners, which was a common practice for fitting these images into historical cases or albums. The reverse of the plate is finished in a darkened, blackened coating. No signatures, maker's marks, or inscriptions are visible on the front or reverse of the photograph. Height: 2 inches; Width: 2.5 inches. The item shows signs of age and wear consistent with its type. Fine surface scratches and small pits are visible across the emulsion (Photo 2 and 3). There is localized darkening and emulsion loss along the top and side edges (Photo 1). The corners have been clipped for mounting (Photo 5). The blackened reverse exhibits minor oxidation, surface scratches, and small areas of finish loss (Photo 4).
