1923 US Peace Silver Dollar - A 1923 United States Peace silver dollar. The coin is struck in a composition of 90% silver and 10% copper at the Philadelphia Mint. The obverse features a left-facing profile of Liberty wearing a radiate crown. Legible inscriptions on the obverse include L I B E R T Y along the upper rim, I N G O D W E T R V S T across the lower field, and the date 1 9 2 3 at the base. The reverse depicts a bald eagle perched on a rock clutching an olive branch. The reverse inscriptions include U N I T E D S T A T E S O F A M E R I C A along the top rim, E P L V R I B V S V N V M just below the country name, O N E D O L L A R across the center field, and the word P E A C E incused into the rock at the base. The coin features a reeded edge and lacks a mint mark. Both the obverse and reverse surfaces exhibit a heavy, uneven yellowish-gold coloration and dark brown patches. This 1923 date is a common issue for the Peace dollar series. Weight: 0.859 ozt. The coin shows heavy circulation wear consistent with a low grade, with significant loss of detail and flattening on the high points of Liberty's hair, the radiate crown, and the eagle's feathers (photos 1, 2). Numerous surface scratches, hairlines, and contact marks are visible across both faces (photos 1, 2). The surfaces show heavy, uneven yellowish-gold and dark brown toning consistent with environmental exposure or chemical alteration. A concentrated area of dark brown environmental damage and corrosion is present along the obverse rim between the 7 and 11 o'clock positions (photo 1). The rim shows several small nicks and edge knocks (photo 1).
