Bidspirit auction | Mexican Sterling Silver Aztec Sun
Mexican Sterling Silver Aztec Sun Stone Calendar Pendant - A circular sterling silver pendant from Mexico featuring a central design depicting the Aztec Sun Stone, commonly referred to as the Aztec calendar. The high-relief casting portrays the central face of the deity Tonatiuh surrounded by intricate concentric rings of cosmological symbols. The pendant is finished with a scalloped, openwork scroll-work border and a simple ring bail. The reverse surface is impressed with several marks including two lines of text reading STERLING and MEXICO. Above the text are three partially worn impressed numerals, with the first numeral clearly legible as a 9, followed by two characters that are heavily rubbed but appear to read 00. To the right is a small circular impressed assay mark containing a stylized eagle with a central numeral. Diameter: 1 1/2 inches Weight: 0.513 ozt. The pendant exhibits heavy tarnish and oxidation concentrated within the recessed areas of the design (photo 1). The flat reverse side shows significant surface scratching and scuffing from past use (photo 2 and 3). The bail remains intact and functional. No evidence of repairs or structural damage is visible.
