US 1878 One Dollar Morgan Silver Coin 7 Tail Feathers Third Reverse Variety - A US 1878 silver dollar struck at the Philadelphia Mint, featuring the Morgan design. This specific example is the 7 Tail Feathers, Third Reverse variety, also identified as the Slanting Arrow Feather or SAF type. The obverse shows the profile of Liberty facing left, the date 1878, and the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. The reverse displays a heraldic eagle, the motto In God we trust, and the denomination ONE DOLLAR. The coin is composed of 90% silver and 10% copper. It is housed in a white cardboard 2x2 flip featuring handwritten notations in blue ink that read 1878 7TF, 3RD REV, and VF. A small impressed M is located on the truncation of Liberty's neck and on the ribbon bow of the wreath on the reverse. The coin exhibits moderate circulated wear consistent with a Very Fine grade. There is visible loss of detail on the highest points of Liberty's hair above the ear and on the leaves of the coronet (photo 1). The reverse shows significant wear on the eagle's breast and the tops of the wings (photo 3). Several prominent horizontal and diagonal surface scratches are visible in the fields of the reverse, particularly to the left of the eagle's wing and above the eagle's head (photo 3). Dark peripheral toning is present along the rims on both the obverse and reverse.
