US 1878 Morgan Silver Dollar, 7 Tail Feathers Variety - A US 1878 Morgan silver dollar, minted in Philadelphia as indicated by the absence of a mint mark. The coin is composed of .900 silver and .100 copper. The obverse features a left-facing profile of Liberty with the word LIBERTY readable on the coronet, surrounded by the date 1878, thirteen stars, and the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. The reverse depicts a bald eagle with outstretched wings and seven tail feathers, encircled by a laurel wreath with the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and ONE DOLLAR. The motto In God we trust is inscribed above the eagle in Gothic script. The coin is housed in a white cardboard 2x2 flip secured with three metal staples. The flip bears handwritten notations in blue ink: 1878 and 7 TF at the upper left, VF at the upper right, and Morgan Dollar at the bottom. The 1878 issue represents the first year of production for this series following the Bland-Allison Act. The coin displays moderate wear consistent with the Very Fine grade noted on the holder. Obverse wear is visible as flattening of the hair curls above Liberty's ear and along the forehead (photo 1). The reverse shows significant loss of detail on the eagle's breast and leg feathers (photo 2). Dark circular toning is present along the periphery of both the obverse and reverse rims (photos 1 and 2). Numerous small contact marks and surface abrasions are visible across the fields, typical for a circulated specimen.
