US 1881-O Morgan Silver Dollar - A US silver dollar, Morgan type, dated 1881. This coin was struck at the New Orleans Mint, identified by an impressed letter O mint mark located on the reverse, centered above the DO in DOLLAR. The obverse features the Morgan Liberty head design with the legend E PLURIBUS UNUM, thirteen stars, and the date. The reverse features the heraldic eagle design, the motto In God we trust in Gothic script, the country name, and the denomination. The coin is struck in a 90 percent silver and 10 percent copper alloy and features a reeded edge. Weight: 0.839 ozt. The coin exhibits a circulated grade with significant wear on the high points of the design, most notably on Liberty's hair and the cotton blossoms (photo 1) and the eagle's breast feathers (photo 4). Numerous small contact marks, nicks, and fine scratches are visible in the fields on both sides (photos 1, 4). A dark gray patina is present in the recessed areas of the inscriptions and design elements (photos 1, 4). Yellowish-golden toning is concentrated around the peripheral rims (photos 1, 4). A small dark spot is visible below the first 1 in the date (photo 1).
