Bidspirit auction | A Pair of Japanese Hand-Carved
A Pair of Japanese Hand-Carved Mother-of-Pearl Water Buffalo Earrings - A matched pair of Japanese screw-back earrings featuring hand-carved folk art designs. Each earring is crafted from a single piece of iridescent mother-of-pearl, intricately carved to depict a figure wearing a traditional conical hat riding a water buffalo. The designs are mirrored for symmetrical wear. The carved elements are mounted on silver screw-back findings intended for non-pierced ears. The circular heads of the screw-back mechanisms are stamped with the characters SILVER arranged in an arc along the top edge and JAPAN in an arc along the bottom edge. These marks indicate the metal content and Japanese manufacture, likely for the export market during the mid-20th century. Across the widest point: 1 inch (25.4 mm) Height: 0.9 inch (23 mm). The earrings are in good vintage condition. The carved mother-of-pearl components appear well-preserved with no visible chips, cracks, or significant wear to the carved details (photo 1, photo 4, photo 5). The silver-tone metal findings exhibit a dark patina and tarnish consistent with age (photo 2, photo 3). The screw-back mechanisms are intact and remain functional.
