US 1879-O Morgan Silver Dollar - A US silver dollar dated 1879, struck at the New Orleans Mint. The obverse features a left-facing profile of Liberty wearing a cap with the word LIBERTY, surrounded by the legend E PLURIBUS UNUM, thirteen stars, and the date. The reverse depicts a heraldic eagle with outstretched wings holding an olive branch and arrows, within a partial wreath. The reverse inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, In God we trust, and the denomination ONE DOLLAR. A small O mint mark is located on the reverse above the letters DO in DOLLAR. The coin features a reeded edge and is struck in a silver-colored metal. It is housed in a white cardboard and mylar coin flip. The flip bears handwritten notations in blue ink: 1879-O at the top of the obverse and characters that appear to read DURECA at the bottom of the reverse. The coin displays heavy and uneven dark toning and oxidation across both faces, most prominently on the left field of the obverse (photo 1) and throughout the reverse fields (photo 2). The obverse surfaces exhibit numerous contact marks and clusters of small scratches, primarily located on Liberty's cheek and neck (photo 3). Original mint luster is visible in the protected areas around the lettering and design elements. There are no major rim nicks or obvious signs of cleaning observed.
