A Collection of 20 United States Indian Head Cents - A collection of 20 United States Indian Head cents, struck in bronze. Designed by James B. Longacre, the obverse of each coin features a left-facing profile of Liberty wearing a feathered Native American headdress, with the word LIBERTY inscribed on the headband. The portrait is encircled by the text UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the mintage year. The reverse, also designed by Longacre, depicts the denomination ONE CENT within an oak leaf and acorn wreath, surmounted by a small Union shield and terminating in a ribbon-tied bundle of three arrows. Legible dates identified in this collection include 1890, 1891 (two pieces), 1893, 1896, 1898, 1900 (two pieces), 1901 (two pieces), 1902, 1903, and 1905. The dates on the six remaining coins are illegible or only partially distinguishable due to wear and surface damage. This group is in circulated condition, generally ranging from About Good to Good. Most examples show significant wear with flattened details in the headdress and reverse wreath (photo 1). Environmental damage is present on several pieces, including heavy green verdigris corrosion on three examples (photos 1, 8, and 10) and a thick, crusty white residue on the reverse of one 1902 cent (photo 5). Additional condition issues noted across the lot include surface pitting, scattered scratches, minor rim nicks, and dark, uneven toning consistent with long-term circulation (photo 1).
