Matchbox - An antique advertising group comprising a lithographed metal matchbox sleeve and an inner cardboard matchbox. The metal sleeve features a white finish with a topsy-turvy optical illusion consisting of a line drawing of a man's face that appears to frown when oriented with the text BEFORE USING PABST'S OKAY and smile when inverted with the text AFTER USING PABST'S OKAY. One side of the sleeve is printed PABST CHEMICAL CO. 1115 N. FRANKLIN ST., CHICAGO, ILL. WHEN IN TROUBLE USE PABST'S OKAY SPECIFIC. The inner cardboard matchbox features a printed label reading SIGNAL LIGHT AMERICAN DIAMOND SAFETY MATCHES THE DIAMOND MATCH CO. and contains wooden safety matches with dark-colored heads. The metal sleeve measures approximately 2.25 inches in length. The white finish of the metal sleeve shows significant foxing, staining, and yellowish discoloration throughout (photo 2 and 3). The metal edges and interior exhibit oxidation and pitting (photo 4). The cardboard matchbox shows edge fraying, corner wear, and surface creasing consistent with age (photo 1).
