Bidspirit auction | 8th Century Abbasid Caliphate Silver

8th Century Abbasid Caliphate Silver Dirham - An Abbasid Caliphate silver dirham, likely struck during the mid-8th century. The obverse central field features three lines of Kufic script stating the Shahada: There is no god but Allah, He is unique, He has no partner. The reverse central field features three lines of Kufic script reading Muhammad is the messenger of Allah. Marginal legends surround the central fields on both faces, containing mint, date, and religious formulas, though these areas show heavy circulation wear. The coin is struck on a thin, flat silver flan. Weight: 0.081 ozt (2.52 grams) as measured on a digital scale. The coin shows significant circulation wear across both faces, with considerable softening and illegibility in the marginal legends. A small circular suspension hole is pierced through the flan near the upper edge (Photo 1 and Photo 2). The silver surfaces exhibit a dark grey patina and minor surface marks consistent with age.
