1879-S United States Morgan Silver Dollar - A United States Morgan silver dollar coin. The obverse features the left-facing profile of Liberty, designed by George T. Morgan. She wears a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton, and a headband inscribed with the word LIBERTY. The upper border is inscribed E PLURIBUS UNUM and the lower border features the date 1879 flanked by thirteen stars. The reverse depicts a bald eagle with outstretched wings, clutching an olive branch and three arrows within a partial laurel wreath. The motto In God we trust is presented in Gothic script above the eagle's head. The border is inscribed UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and ONE DOLLAR. A small embossed S is positioned on the reverse, centered above the letters DO of the word DOLLAR, indicating production at the San Francisco Mint. The coin is composed of 90 percent silver and 10 percent copper. Weight: 0.839 ozt. The coin is in circulated condition with visible wear on the highest points of the design. The obverse shows significant smoothing of the hair detail above the ear and on the cotton and wheat elements of the cap (photo 1). The reverse exhibits wear on the eagle's breast feathers and the outer tips of the wings (photo 2). Both surfaces display numerous fine contact marks, small scratches, and light greyish toning consistent with circulation (photos 1, 3). There are several small nicks and indentations along the raised rim (photo 2).
