German States Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel Silver 2/3 Thaler Coin, Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand, 1786 - This silver 2/3 Thaler coin was issued by the Duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel under the reign of Duke Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand. The obverse features the leaping Westphalian Horse surrounded by the Latin legend CAROLVS GVILIELMVS FERDINANDVS D G DVX BR ET LVN. The reverse shows the denomination 2/3 above the date 1786. The upper inscription reads XX EINE FEINE MARK and the initials M C appear at the base. The coin is housed in a white cardboard and plastic protective holder with several handwritten annotations in black ink. The top of the holder is labeled German States AG, the left side reads WOLFENBUTTEL, the bottom is inscribed Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand I, and the right side features the notation 20.-. A large circular hole has been drilled through the center-right field of the coin (photo 1). The surfaces show heavy circulation wear, with significant smoothing to the details of the horse and the legends (photo 3). Both faces exhibit dark toning and numerous fine scratches and contact marks consistent with age and use (photo 2).
