1863 United States Ten Cents Fractional Currency Note - This Second Issue fractional currency note, authorized by the Act of March 3, 1863, has a face value of ten cents. The obverse features a central portrait of Columbia set within an oval frame. A printed line at the top edge reads American Bank Note Co. N.Y. (photo 1). The central text includes UNITED STATES, TEN CENTS, and Receivable for all United States Stamps. The lower banner is printed with FRACTIONAL CURRENCY and features the printed signatures of Register Colby and Treasurer Spinner. The reverse is printed in green ink with large 10 numerals and a central block of text detailing its exchangeability for United States Notes. The bottom edge of the reverse bears the printed text National Bank Note Company New York. (photo 2). The note is printed on paper containing visible red security fibers. The note is in heavily circulated condition. There is significant overall soiling and dark toning across the obverse and reverse (photos 1 and 2). Multiple deep vertical and horizontal creases are visible throughout the paper (photo 1). The edges show significant wear and rounding at all four corners, with a small nick at the bottom center (photo 1). A darker localized stain is present on the center of the reverse (photo 2). The item is housed in a clear, two-piece acrylic screw-down holder.
