1902 United States Morgan Silver Dollar Philadelphia Mint 90 Percent Silver - This is a 1902 United States Morgan silver dollar struck at the Philadelphia Mint. The obverse features the left-facing profile of Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap decorated with wheat and cotton blossoms and a headband inscribed LIBERTY. The periphery includes the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM, thirteen stars representing the original colonies, and the date 1902. The reverse depicts a heraldic eagle with outspread wings, clutching three arrows and an olive branch within a laurel wreath. Reverse inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, the motto In God we trust, and the denomination ONE DOLLAR. The coin has a reeded edge and is composed of 90 percent silver and 10 percent copper. The absence of a mint mark above the DO in DOLLAR on the reverse confirms mintage at Philadelphia. As shown on a digital scale, the coin weighs 0.847 ozt (approximately 26.35 grams) (photo 3). The coin is in circulated condition with wear patterns consistent with a mid-grade circulated strike. Significant flattening is visible on the high relief points of the design, including Liberty’s hair curls above the ear and the feathers on the eagle’s breast (photos 1, 2, 4). The fields and devices exhibit numerous contact marks, small dings, and surface scratches. Darkened oxidation and debris are present within the recessed areas of the lettering on both sides. A small brownish spot of oxidation or residue is noted on the obverse near the wheat stalk (photo 1). The reeded edge shows wear but remains defined. This coin is uncertified and is not housed in a professional grading slab.
