Bidspirit auction | Antique Copper and Brass Bullseye
Antique Copper and Brass Bullseye Hand Lantern with Internal Burner Assembly - This antique bullseye hand lantern is constructed from a cylindrical copper and brass body featuring a dark, aged patina. The lantern is equipped with a large convex glass lens designed to focus light. The top is crowned with a domed chimney and a small brass finial. A carrying handle is attached to the top, consisting of two brass struts supporting a decoratively turned wooden grip that retains portions of an original black finish. The base is ventilated with seven small holes and stands on three integral hemispherical feet. Internally, the lantern contains a removable brass oil reservoir and burner assembly. The burner unit includes a circular wick holder with a charred wick, a small knurled adjustment knob, and an attached circular metal reflector mounted on a brass support arm. The interior of the main body shows oxidation and verdigris. The collar of the burner assembly bears worn, stamped characters that are not legible as a name or specific manufacturer. No other maker marks, signatures, or labels were identified on the piece. Height of the main body and dome: approximately 6 inches; Total height with handle extended: approximately 8 to 9 inches. The lantern is in well-used antique condition with a heavy, natural patina and surface oxidation across the copper and brass components (photo 1, photo 4). There is visible verdigris on the interior base (photo 11) and the burner unit (photo 7, photo 9). The wooden handle shows extensive wear with the majority of the black finish lost to reveal the light-colored wood beneath (photo 1, photo 12). The internal reflector is tarnished but remains intact (photo 7, photo 10). The glass lens is complete with some surface grime (photo 4). The mechanical function of the wick adjustment knob is untested.
