Antique American Hand Pieced and Tied Patchwork Scrap Quilt - An antique American hand-pieced and tied patchwork quilt featuring a pattern of repeating diamond motifs formed within square blocks, often referred to as a scrappy star or diamond-in-a-square pattern. The quilt top is constructed from a diverse assortment of late 19th to early 20th-century cotton fabrics, including various calico prints, ginghams, stripes, checks, and solids in a multi-color palette featuring navy blue, red, cream, tan, and brown. Rather than traditional quilting stitches, the layers are secured by small thread ties positioned at the center of each diamond patch. The interior is filled with natural cotton fiber batting. The reverse side is finished with a reddish-brown and white printed cotton fabric decorated with a repeating small oval motif. The perimeter is finished with a narrow printed cotton binding. No maker marks, signatures, or labels are present on the textile. Approximately 82 inches by 81.5 inches. The quilt is in poor to fair condition with extensive signs of age and heavy use. There is widespread fraying and shredding to numerous individual patches throughout the top, particularly affecting the darker dyed fabrics (photo 5 and 6). Several patches are missing significant portions of fabric, leaving the underlying cotton batting exposed (photo 9 and 10). The edges and binding show heavy wear, fraying, and loss of fabric (photo 11 and 12). The backing fabric has several large tears and punctures (photo 14). There is overall fading, discoloration, and light staining consistent with the age of the materials.
