Antique American Hand Pieced and Hand Quilted Cotton Star Pattern Scrap Quilt - A rectangular antique American patchwork quilt constructed from various cotton fabrics. The central design features a four by four grid of sixteen eight pointed star blocks, a variation of the LeMoyne Star pattern. The stars are hand pieced from a wide assortment of late nineteenth and early twentieth century scrap textiles, including printed calicos, shirting, ginghams, florals, and stripes in a palette of browns, tans, blues, and reds. Each star block is set against a white ground with small green printed triangular corner accents. The blocks are separated by red printed sashing featuring a white geometric pattern. The quilt is finished with a triple border consisting of a narrow inner red print, a wide blue grey border with a white and red dotted print, and a final narrow red print outer border. The reverse side is covered in a blue and white checkered gingham cotton fabric. The entire piece is hand quilted in a simple linear parallel pattern. No maker marks, signatures, or labels are visible on the textile. Approximately 72 inches by 68 inches. The quilt shows significant signs of age and wear. A large, dark brown moisture stain is prominent on the bottom blue grey border (photo 1 and 6). The edges and binding exhibit substantial fraying, fabric loss, and wear throughout, with the internal batting exposed in multiple areas (photo 2, 4, and 5). Several individual fabric pieces within the central star blocks show thinning, shattering, and threadbare spots (photo 3). There is generalized fading and light surface discoloration across the fabrics consistent with long term use and age.
