Edward Miller and Company Vestal Art Nouveau Banquet Lamp with Hand Painted Glass Shade - An American Art Nouveau mixed metal banquet lamp originally designed as an oil lamp and subsequently electrified. The lamp features a brass or brass-plated urn-form body decorated with three applied cast metal mounts in the Art Nouveau style depicting stylized irises with whiplash curves. It rests on an ornate four-footed cast metal base with scrolling foliate relief. A knurled metal burner adjustment knob is embossed with the text VESTAL CO. NEW E. M. & CO. in a circular arrangement, identifying the manufacturer as Edward Miller and Company. The lamp is fitted with a frosted glass shade featuring a flared chimney top and hand-painted Art Nouveau floral motifs in yellow, green, and teal. The underside of the cast metal base shows two separate sets of embossed characters on the cross-braces, one reading 000 and the other 3000. The fixture has been electrified and is fitted with a brown two-prong cord. Shade base diameter: 10 inches. The metal components exhibit significant age-related wear including widespread surface oxidation, pitting, and loss of brass plating across the font and base (photos 2 and 4). Prominent green verdigris is visible on the font and lower pedestal (photos 4 and 10). The steel shade-holder ring shows heavy surface rust (photo 8). The glass shade shows brown staining and surface grime along the lower interior rim (photo 9) but has no visible cracks or large chips. The electrical wiring is of an older vintage and should be inspected by a professional for safety before use (photo 10).
