Antique French Ornate Brass Pendulum Equipoise Postal Scale - This antique pendulum equipoise postal scale features an ornate cast brass tripod base decorated with relief-molded scrollwork and a circular foliate motif. One leg of the base is equipped with a knurled leveling screw. A vertical support arm rises from the base to hold a mechanical linkage system that supports a flat, circular metal weighing pan. The weighing mechanism operates on a gravity-counterweight principle, where weight on the pan causes a pendulum arm to move across a curved, graduated arc to indicate the weight. The central vertical support is stamped with the word DEPOSE in block letters, indicating a French registered design. The curved scale plate is engraved with markings in ounces, including the abbreviation OZ. followed by the numeral 0 and graduations for 1/4, 1/2, 1, 1/2, 2, 1/2, 3, 1/2, and 4. The linkage components and the arc are made of steel or a similar metal, showing a contrast with the brass base. Height: approximately 6.75 inches from the base to the top of the weighing pan. The scale is in used antique condition. Visible surface oxidation and pitting are present on the weighing pan and the steel linkage arms (photo 2, photo 3). The brass base and decorative components exhibit a darkened aged patina with areas of tarnish and surface wear (photo 1). The mechanical linkage appears to be in working order and moves freely across the graduated arc (photo 2).
