D.W. Putnam Co. Grapes and Grape Juice Advertising Thermometer Hammondsport - A circular advertising thermometer for the D.W. Putnam Co. of Hammondsport, New York. The instrument features a round metal case with a glass face protecting a printed paper dial. The dial features decorative typography and an arc-shaped temperature scale ranging from -40 to 120 degrees Fahrenheit. The black metal pointer is finished with a decorative diamond-shaped tip. The paper dial bears the following printed text: Top: FAHRENHEIT Center: D.W. PUTNAM CO. Sub-text: HAMMONDSPORT, N. Y. Primary Advertisement: Grapes and Grape Juice Quality Mark: OF THE HIGHEST QUALITY Slogan at bottom edge: Be sure and see Put The reverse of the metal casing features a circular arrangement of 18 ventilation holes and three small hemispherical feet. A metal mounting loop is attached to the top of the bezel. The internal mechanism appears to be a bimetallic coil. Diameter: 5.75 inches Weight: Under 1 lb. The thermometer exhibits significant signs of age and exposure. The paper dial shows heavy brown damp staining and foxing, most notably along the left and right sides (photo 1). The metal casing, bezel, and mounting loop have heavy surface oxidation, rust, and pitting throughout (photos 1 and 3). Internal grime and residue are present on the underside of the glass face (photo 2). The reverse of the casing shows minor surface dings and paint loss (photo 3). The needle is present and moves, though mechanical accuracy has not been verified.
