Pre Prohibition T. Briggs and Co. Celebrated Lager and Ales Sign - A rectangular embossed metal sign for the T. Briggs and Co. brewery of Elmira, New York. The sign features a white field with high-relief black lithographed lettering in a Victorian style. The primary text reads T. BRIGGS & CO. in large, stylized serif letters across the center. At the top left, the sign is printed with ESTABLISHED 1866. A decorative ribbon banner below the company name contains the word CELEBRATED. The lower half of the sign prominently displays LAGER AND ALES. with the smaller phrases ON TAP. and IN BOTTLES. positioned at the bottom corners. The reverse side is an unfinished metal surface showing heavy mottling and oxidation. A single pre-punched hanging hole is located at the top center. 6.75 inches (W) by 3.25 inches (H). The sign shows age-appropriate wear including scattered paint loss and flaking, which is most prominent on the embossed letters and along the perimeter edges (photo 1). Significant paint loss is visible on the letter O in the word CO. (photo 3). The white field exhibits light staining, discoloration, and small spots of surface oxidation (photo 2). The reverse side displays extensive surface rust and heavy oxidation across the entire area (photo 4). A small rusted metal chain fragment remains attached to the central hanging hole (photo 4). Minor bending is present along the corners and edges (photo 1).
