An Assortment of Vintage Autographed and Unsigned Silent Film Etc Photographs, Publicity Stills, and Related Ephemera - This collection is housed in a black textured binder featuring a hand-written adhesive label on the front reading AUTOGRAPHS ENTERTAINERS, MOVIE STARS, SPORTS FIGURES. The lot consists of various autographed and unsigned promotional photographs, publicity stills, and related ephemera primarily from the 1920s through the 1970s. Autographed items feature signatures in fountain pen, ballpoint ink, and black marker, many with personalized inscriptions. Signed portraits include a Mary Philbin portrait signed Sincerely Mary Philbin, a cowboy portrait of Buck Jones on his horse Silver signed Good Luck Pat from Buck Jones & Silver, and a headshot of Barbara Walters signed in black marker. Two separate signed headshots of Perry Como are present, one inscribed my best wishes Perry Como and the other Very truly yours Perry Como. A headshot of Jo Stafford is signed Sincerely Jo Stafford and bears a printed mark for James J. Kriegsmann NY at the lower right. The collection includes signatures from Patty and Maxene of The Andrews Sisters on a Playbill for the musical Over Here!. Other signed portraits include Richard Arlen signed Sincerely yours Richard Arlen, Colleen Moore signed Sincerely Colleen Moore, and two separate portraits of Marion Davies both signed Sincerely Marion Davies. A portrait of Richard Barthelmess features a Spurr Hollywood mark and is signed Cordially yours Richard Barthelmess. Additional signed items include a Marilyn Miller portrait signed Sincerely Marilyn Miller, a Ben Lyon portrait signed With best wishes Ben Lyon, and a full-body boxing pose signed Jimmy McLarnin Vancouver, B.C.. Further signatures are present for Anita Page, Creighton Hale, Jacqueline Logan, Richard Talmadge, Louise Fazenda, May McAvoy, Charles Rogers, George O'Brien, Virginia Valli, and Marian Nixon. A slip of paper signed Heather Angel is inscribed To John Christopher With Best Wishes. Musical promotional photos include Bobby Helms and Joe Edwards signed on the reverse of a Decca Records photo, and Bob Perry signed on the reverse of a Bandera Records photo. Unsigned and promotional items include a hand-colored Ginger Rogers RKO Pictures portrait with a printed signature, a 1934 portrait of Francis Lederer, and publicity stills for Douglas Fairbanks in The Thief of Bagdad and Nelson Eddy with Jeanette MacDonald in Rose Marie. A promotional still for The Five De Marco Sisters on M-G-M Records is present, along with a portrait of polo player Tommy Hitchcock identified by hand-written text. Ephemera includes a 1942 postmarked envelope from Saint Augustine, FL addressed to Mrs. Charles B. Duff in Anniston, Alabama, bearing a 3-cent FOR DEFENSE postage stamp. Various news clippings and a snapshot of a woman and child are also included. The collection shows varying degrees of age-related wear throughout. Silvering and oxidation are present on several early black-and-white portraits, most notably on the Mary Philbin (photo 1) and Colleen Moore (photo 19) examples. Significant physical damage is observed on the Marilyn Miller portrait which is torn horizontally through the center and repaired with tape (photo 23). The Ben Lyon portrait shows significant surface loss to the left side of the subject's face (photo 26). Scattered foxing and brown staining are visible on the Anita Page (photo 31) and Eddie Sheebt (photo 29) portraits. General toning, edge creasing, and corner wear are consistent with age across the items. Some items show adhesive residue from tape or being previously mounted in an album (photo 8). The binder shows light surface wear and dust.
