Dietz Vesta Railroad Lantern with C.C.C. & St. L. RY. Branding and NYCS Red Glass Globe - This antique railroad lantern features a metal wire-guarded cage construction housing a red glass globe. The top cap of the lantern is embossed with the characters DIETZ VESTA, NEW YORK, and U.S.A. The shoulder area of the frame is embossed with the literal characters C.C.C. & St. L. RY., identifying its service with the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railway, also known as the Big Four Railroad. The red glass globe is embossed with the characters NYCS, signifying the New York Central System, and includes a small circular mark containing the letter W. The metal fount area near the base is stamped with multiple patent dates, including APR. 1. 24, MAY 4. 26, SEPT. 1. 26, JULY 20. 27, and AUG. 9. 27. The lantern includes a top bail handle and a tiered base. Height: 10 inches to the top of the cap Base diameter: 6 inches. The lantern exhibits heavy surface oxidation and rust throughout the metal cage, frame, and base (photo 1, 3, 6). Significant accumulation of dirt and soot is visible on the upper metal components (photo 2). The red glass globe appears structurally sound with no visible cracks or chips (photo 3, 5). There is minor deformation and bending to the wire cage supports consistent with heavy railroad service (photo 4, 7).
