Embury Manufacturing Co. No. 40 Traffic Gard City of Rochester Kerosene Lantern - A red-painted steel kerosene traffic warning lantern featuring a wide, weighted base and a fresnel-style red glass globe. The top cap of the lantern is embossed with the manufacturer details reading EMBURY MANUFACTURING CO. WARSAW NEW YORK U.S.A. and the model designation No 40 TRAFFIC GARD. The base of the unit is impressed with municipal identification reading CITY OF ROCHESTER and includes a threaded metal fuel filler cap. The red glass lens is embossed with the text EMBURY NO. followed by partially illegible characters ending in NC. The lantern is constructed with a wire cage guard surrounding the globe and a wire bail handle for transport or hanging. The underside of the base shows a series of embossed concentric rings. The lantern body measures 5 inches in height from the base to the top of the cap. This lantern shows heavy signs of age and municipal service. Significant paint loss and surface oxidation are visible across the entire steel body and wire cage (photos 1 and 4). Heavy rust and pitting are present on the wire bail handle and top attachment points (photo 3). The red glass globe remains intact but is coated in a layer of accumulated grime and soot (photo 2). The base exhibits surface scratches and scattered oxidation (photo 5).
