Jo. Levinson Masonic Scottish Rite 32nd Degree Double Headed Eagle Cast Metal Paperweight - This cast metal paperweight, made by Louis Levinson, features the double headed eagle emblematic of the Scottish Rite branch of Freemasonry. The central triangular medallion is incised with the number 32, representing the 32nd degree or Sublime Prince of the Royal Secret. A curved scroll at the base is embossed with the Latin motto SPES MEA IN DEO EST. The figure is supported by a circular pedestal base. The reverse of the piece is impressed with a three line copyright statement reading COPYRIGHT BY JO. LEVINSON in all capital letters. The item is constructed from a non-ferrous cast metal, likely brass or bronze, with a surviving gold tone finish. Standing height: 3.75 inches. Significant loss and wear to the original gold tone finish are visible across the high points of the eagle and the pedestal base (photo 1). The reverse shows extensive finish loss and oxidation (photo 2). A rough, irregular opening is located on the underside of the base (photo 4), possibly a byproduct of the casting process or an indication of a former mounting. Minor verdigris and surface grime are present in the recessed areas of the feathers and lettering (photo 1).
