Carved Hardwood Decorative Border Element with Archaic Scroll Motifs - A long, narrow rectangular decorative element hand-carved from dark-stained hardwood. The face features relief decoration consisting of stylized archaic scrolls and geometric patterns similar to Chinese bronze motifs. The piece is finished with mitered ends at approximately 45-degree angles, indicating it was likely part of a frame or architectural trim. A small vertical hole is drilled into the top edge near the center. The reverse is flat with two shallow, hand-cut rectangular recesses and visible tool marks. Faint incised characters are visible on the reverse, including a character resembling a large X near the center and other marks to the left that may be the letters A or H, though they are too weathered to be clearly legible as a name or word. One mitered end has a small amount of wood or adhesive residue on the rear face. Across the length: 9.5 inches Across the width: 0.75 inches. The piece exhibits wear consistent with age. There are minor chips and abrasions on the raised portions of the carving (photo 1). Surface residue and dirt are present in the recessed areas (photo 5). The reverse shows irregular tool marks in the recesses and light surface staining (photo 3).
