American School, 19th Century, Portrait of a Gentleman - A mid-19th-century American School portrait of a mature gentleman, executed in oil on stretched canvas. The sitter is rendered in a three-quarter view against a dark, neutral background. He is depicted with distinctive mutton-chop sideburns and is dressed in formal mid-Victorian attire, comprising a dark frock coat, a high-collared white shirt, and a black cravat. The work is housed in an ornate period gilded wood and gesso frame with an oval aperture, decorated with scrolling foliate corner ornaments and a diamond-patterned cove. The verso of the canvas features a stenciled manufacturer mark reading PREPARED BY P. DECHAUX NEW-YORK. The verso of the frame retains a partially intact paper label for BARLOW & EDMONDS'S LOOKING GLASS AND PICTURE FRAME MANUFACTORY, No. 395 Main Street, POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. The reverse of the canvas is also marked with the dimensions 22 x 27. 27 x 22 inches. The canvas features a vertical puncture approximately one inch in length located in the upper right quadrant within the sitter's hair, with associated paint loss. The paint surface exhibits an overall accumulation of grime and a darkened, aged varnish. Fine craquelure is visible throughout the composition. The gilded frame shows significant losses to the gesso ornamentation, particularly at the corner elements and along the outer edges, with scattered abrasions and general wear to the gilded finish throughout. The verso shows expected age-related darkening of the canvas and dust accumulation on the stretcher bars.
