George Elmer Browne (American, 1871-1946), Tonalist Landscape with Cottage and Figure, 1902 - This oil on wooden panel painting by George Elmer Browne is a prime example of American Tonalism, dated 1902. The composition features a rural landscape dominated by a warm, monochromatic sepia palette and soft, atmospheric lighting. The ornate gilded frame shows visible condition issues, including numerous cracks in the gesso molding and scattered chips and losses to the gilt finish, particularly concentrated at the corners and outer edges. The wooden backing board and restoration label exhibit age-related yellowing and minor staining.
