Riley, Tonalist Woodland Landscape, Oil on Board - An oil on board landscape painting executed in a Tonalist style, depicting a wooded scene with a path or stream beneath a dense canopy of trees. The composition utilizes a palette of muted greens, ochres, and deep umbers with a central focal point of diffused light. The work is signed vertically in dark pigment I M Riley in the lower right corner. The painting is housed in an ornate gilded composition frame with foliate and shell scrolled motifs. The painting exhibits significant condition issues, including multiple areas of active flaking and paint loss in the upper left and central left portions of the board, exposing the white ground. A fine network of craquelure is visible across the paint surface. The work has an accumulation of surface dirt and a layer of heavily yellowed varnish. The gilded frame shows age-appropriate wear, including cracks in the gesso and small chips to the decorative elements, particularly at the corners.
