1871 Town of Hannibal $1,000 Municipal Bond for the Lake Ontario Shore Rail Road Company No. 7 - This municipal bond, identified as serial number 7, was issued by the Town of Hannibal, County of Oswego, State of New York, on October 1, 1871. The bond was issued for a face value of $1,000 in aid of the Lake Ontario Shore Rail Road Company. The document is printed on cream-colored paper with a large red $1000 underprint and red serial number. A central lithographed vignette depicts a 19th-century steam locomotive and passenger cars crossing a bridge through a wooded landscape with an eagle overhead. A smaller seal at the bottom center shows two figures flanking a shield. The bond features an ornate black decorative border and three red oval stamps on the right margin under the heading Commissioners. It bears the original signatures of commissioners Alfred Rice, Garret Lewis (in purple ink), and M. B. Brown. The reverse side includes printed bond information and a handwritten note stating, The within Bond is fully satisfied July 2 1881, followed by several signatures including B. S. Tallman, H. S. Guthrie, and J. H. Carr. The lithographer mark at the bottom left reads Charles M. Cornwell, Lithographer, 247 Pearl St. N.Y. Width: 16 3/16 inches Height: 11 3/4 inches. The bond is extensively cancelled with numerous circular and pinhole punch marks across the central text and signatures. Visible condition defects include prominent horizontal and vertical fold lines, light foxing, and staining throughout. There is a small section of paper missing from the bottom right corner margin.
