British School, 19th Century 'Portrait of Peter Murrell' - This Regency-period portrait miniature is executed in watercolor on an unidentified support and depicts a young gentleman in three-quarter profile. The sitter is rendered with dark, tousled hair and is dressed in a high white cravat under an ochre-colored double-breasted coat with dark buttons. The painting is housed in an oval brass bezel set within a square ebonized frame, which is surmounted by a decorative gilt-metal hanger in a foliate motif. The verso of the frame retains an old paper label with a handwritten inscription transcribed as Peter Murrell, identifying the sitter. 5.5 x 5 in. The painting surface exhibits moderate foxing and discoloration throughout the background. Several fine vertical scratches and hairline cracks are visible in the paint layer near the sitter’s face and chest. The ebonized frame shows minor scuffs, scratches, and light wear to the edges. The backing is currently secured with non-archival modern masking tape.
