Attr. Eugene Carriere, Standing Nude Study Oil on Canvas - This oil on stretched canvas depicts a standing male nude figure within an atmospheric landscape. The composition is executed in a tonalist style utilizing a muted palette of ochres, deep greens, and grays, characteristic of the work of Eugene Carriere. The central figure is rendered with loose brushwork and visible impasto, emerging from a dark and murky background. A small reddish-brown paper tag bearing the number 106 is affixed to the lower-left corner of the front of the canvas. The verso features a fragmented French auction receipt from the office of the Parisian auctioneer Paul Chevallier (Commissaire-Priseur), identifying the historical location at 10 rue Le Peletier. Additionally, the wooden stretcher is marked with a handwritten numeral 403 in dark pencil. The painting is housed in a wide, gessoed wooden frame with a gold-painted finish. 16.5 x 13.25 inches (Frame). The painting is in poor condition and requires professional conservation. A large L-shaped tear, approximately 4 inches in total length, is located in the center of the canvas through the figure. There is a smaller puncture/tear near the lower-left edge. The surface exhibits overall grime, a yellowed varnish layer, and fine craquelure. The frame shows extensive wear, including significant cracking and loss to the gesso and gold-painted surface.
