1863 Confederate States of America $1000 Loan Bond with 11 Interest Coupons - This original Confederate States of America 1,000 dollar loan bond is dated March 2, 1863, and was issued in Richmond, Virginia. The document is printed in black ink on thin off-white paper and features a large numerical 1000 overlay in the center field. It includes three distinct vignettes: a portrait of Jefferson Davis at the top left, a landscape view of Richmond at the top right, and a seated allegorical figure at the bottom center. The left border contains the vertical text One Thousand Dollars within an ornate frame. The bond bears the handwritten serial number 244034 in two locations and a handwritten signature for the Register of the Treasury, Robert Tyler. There are eleven attached interest coupons at the bottom, each for forty dollars, covering periods from 1863 to 1868. Printed markings at the bottom center read EVANS and COGSWELL COLUMBIA S.C. and the bottom right corner of the main bond is marked G. Wegelin Lith. The item is currently housed in a two-piece clear acrylic display frame secured with sixteen brass-tone bolts. Width: 14 inches Height: 18 inches. The document is in poor to fair condition. It exhibits heavy overall foxing and significant dark brown dampstaining, which is particularly prominent on the lower half and visible on the reverse side. There are multiple deep horizontal and vertical fold creases throughout with minor associated paper splitting and edge wear.
